The Wichita Blues Society has been an affiliate of the Memphis-based Blues Foundation since 1983. Our mission is to ensure the future of the Blues, a uniquely American art form, by celebrating blues recording and performances, and expanding appreciation and awareness of Blues music’s significance. We do this by hosting and supporting live music events, and outreach through our Blues in the Schools program and other community involvement.
The WBS is a non-profit organization run by volunteers and supported through memberships, donations and sponsors.

B.I.T.S. Program
Blues In The Schools is an umbrella term used to describe a program that utilizes a classroom format to teach children about the Blues. Programs are not limited to schools or classrooms; they can be held anywhere.
Why Teach The Blues? The Blues is the first truly American music. With its roots in the deep South of the 1800s, it spread across the U.S., evolving based on the styles and preferences of the region, but always soulful and reflecting the human condition. From the acoustic blues of the front porch to the electrifying sounds of the Chicago Blues scene, it has been the major influence in jazz, rock and roll, and country western music. We can find common ground through the Blues.

Utter the phrase “young blues rock guitarist” within earshot of anyone with even a cursory knowledge of the modern musical vanguard and the first name they are most likely to respond with will be Kenny Wayne Shepherd. The Louisiana born axeman and songsmith has sold millions of albums while throwing singles into the Top 10, shining a light on the rich blues of the past and forging ahead with his own modern twist on a classic sound he has embodied since his teens.

Joanne Shaw Taylor was discovered by Dave Stewart of the Eurythmics at the age of 16 who, having watched her play, immediately invited her on the road with his supergroup D.U.P. – a career in music was born and in the preceding years, her incredible guitar playing saw her build an army of plaudits including Jimmy Cliff, Joe Bonamassa, Stevie Wonder and Annie Lennox. Since then, she has become one of the most sought-after guitarists in the world of rock. Over the past two decades, Joanne has proven herself as a prolific songwriter, releasing seven acclaimed albums under her belt, each increasingly more successful with her 2019 “Reckless Heart” breaking into the UK Top 20 Album Chart and cementing herself as one of the most important exports in British blues-rock.

Ken Valdez returns with a fire breathing rock record entitled Saints And Sinners, named after a former rough and tumble roadhouse in northern New Mexico where Valdez was born and raised. While this guitarist, singer, songwriter and producer fuses elements of blues, rock, funk and Latin music to create a sound all his own, he kicked things up a notch this time out. GA-20 clearly is on to something big. It’s a movement, a new traditional blues revival. The dynamic, throwback blues trio are disciples of the place where traditional blues, country and rock ‘n’ roll intersect. “We make records that we would want to listen to,” says guitarist Matt Stubbs. “It’s our take on the song-based traditional electric blues we love.” Stubbs and guitarist/vocalist Pat Faherty, and drummer Tim Carman have been at the forefront of this traditional blues revival since they first formed in 2018. It’s no wonder they skyrocketed to the top of the Billboard Blues Charts.

Dirty Red and The Soul Shakers are a modern-day powerhouse-blues band, built on old-school influences and a mutual love for the down'n'dirty style of blues that define the band's sound. A dangerously tight rhythm section, backing a funky, shake-your-money-maker groove, guarantees ladies dancing and good times! Top that with wailing blues harp, jaw-dropping guitar licks, and the unmistakable charm and soul of the towering blues-man they call, "Dirty Red," and you can bet you're gonna find yourself hooked.
