Check Out the Local Blues

The Wichita Blues Society has been supporting the blues since 1983. If you have a gig or an event you’d like us to include, please send information to as far in advance as possible to ensure it gets posted before the event. NOTE: This is a “community calendar” and not all shows or events listed are sponsored by the Wichita Blues Society.

Event Information:

  • Youth Jam

↑ Michael Peltzer, a WBS Jam Host. teaches guitar and piano at Damn Music.

The Wichita Blues Society’s Youth Jam is held the first Saturday of each month at The Underground, 1628 S. George Washington Boulevard from 4 - 7 p.m.

    ♫ ♪ ♫

The jam is free and open to young people under 21 years of age. Music is not limited to the blues. We encourage vocalists & brass musicians to attend.

A bass amp, drum set and keyboard will be available. Depending on what you play, jammers should bring a small amp, drum sticks (high-hat and cymbals if you prefer your own); brass instruments and vocalists are encouraged to join us.  Local blues musicians will be on hand to share blue fundamentals.

How Did the Youth Jams Get Their Start?

The youth jam evolved from the guitar workshops we began in 2011. We held the first youth jam in August 2012. The goal of the youth jam is to share the Blues with young people, and show them how the fundamentals of blues music will help them play many other types of music. The jam is also a great opportunity for them to experience playing and singing alongside other musicians outside their regular circle, i.e., band class, individual lessons, or strumming alone in their basement.

Meet other young musicians at a WBS jam!

Most of the boys from Skylines The Band met through the WBS jams. You can now hear them across Wichita at various events and venues. If you love music, you will meet some of the most passionate young players in Wichita at these jams.

You will see many of the WBS youth jammers at open mics around Wichita. As you build your confidence and skills, you may want to catch an open mic, too!

The Pina Brothers, 3rd generation Blues Musicians, have been attending the Youth Jams since 2011. The Blues is the first truly American music. With its roots in the deep South of the 1800s, it spread across the U.S., evolving based on the styles and preferences of the region, but always soulful and reflecting the human condition. From the acoustic blues of the front porch to the electrifying sounds of the Chicago Blues scene, it has been the major influence in jazz, rock and roll, and country western music. We can find common ground through the Blues. Watch their video.
